FRANKFORT, Ky. (WCHS) — Artificial Intelligence is quickly becoming a very popular technology, but how much should it be regulated? A task force made up of Kentucky lawmakers has studied the issue and made recommendations to the General Assembly.
“It has the potential to change our everyday lives and so we have to make sure we have the guardrails in place to make sure it is used effectively, efficiently and responsibly,” said Representative Josh Bray, (R) Rockcastle County and Co-Chair of Artificial Intelligence Task Force.
He says the technology has benefits, but in the wrong hands it would create problems.
“From the task force there will be several pieces of legislation filed, hopefully to establish a framework for usage of artificial intelligence in state government,” said Bray.
“Generative AI is a tool, so it depends on who has access to that tool and how they are using it,” said Dr. Shawn Schulenberg, President of the Presidential AI Task Force at Marshall University
He says current artificial intelligence technology gained popularity in the last two years. He welcomes the work of the task force in Kentucky.
“The cat is out of the bag in a lot of ways so it’s important for us in the United States especially to use the technology and build on it in a safe productive way,” said Dr. Schulenberg.
The next session of Kentucky General Assembly convenes in January, and officials say expect a lot of bills to be filed related to artificial intelligence technology.
