We hear a lot about artificial intelligence (AI), but what can it do for us? Is it accurate? Can we trust it? The answers would be a lot, sometimes, but not completely.

The Johnson County Public Library has two opportunities to learn about AI coming up. At 6 p.m. Nov. 21 at our Franklin Branch, Andrew Rosner, director of digital fluency at Franklin College, will explore ChatGPT and AI. You will learn about AI and have the opportunity to ask questions.

The second opportunity you can take advantage of right now. The following article was written entirely by the ChatGPT AI system. It was written in response to the question, “Give me reasons why libraries are still relevant.” It is reprinted precisely as ChatGPT “wrote” it.

**Title: Rediscovering the Treasure Trove: Why You Should Use Your Public Library**

In today’s digital age, the value of public libraries might seem diminished at first glance. However, a closer look reveals that public libraries remain indispensable community hubs that offer a wealth of resources, services, and opportunities for all. Here are several compelling reasons to make the most of your local public library.

### 1. **Free Access to a Vast Collection of Resources**

Public libraries provide free access to an extensive collection of books, magazines, newspapers, and academic journals. Whether you’re researching for a school project, looking for the latest bestseller, or indulging in a classic novel, the library has something for everyone. Beyond print media, many libraries offer digital collections, including e-books, audiobooks, and online databases.

### 2. **Educational Programs and Workshops**

Libraries are educational powerhouses, offering programs and workshops for all ages. From storytime for toddlers to coding classes for teens and resume-building workshops for adults, libraries provide lifelong learning opportunities. These programs help individuals develop new skills, enhance their knowledge, and stay connected with the latest advancements in various fields.

### 3. **Community Engagement and Socialization**

Libraries serve as community centers where people can meet, share ideas, and collaborate. They host a variety of events such as book clubs, author talks, cultural events, and art exhibitions. These events foster a sense of community, encouraging social interaction and cultural exchange among diverse groups of people.

### 4. **Technology Access and Support**

For those who lack access to technology at home, libraries are a vital resource. Most libraries offer free internet access, computer workstations, and even tech gadgets like tablets and e-readers. Additionally, library staff provide assistance with using these technologies, from basic computer skills to more advanced digital literacy.

### 5. **Support for Job Seekers and Entrepreneurs**

Libraries offer numerous resources for job seekers, including access to job listings, career counseling, and workshops on resume writing and interview skills. For entrepreneurs, libraries provide access to business databases, market research tools, and sometimes even co-working spaces. These resources can be invaluable for starting or growing a business.

### 6. **A Quiet and Safe Space**

Public libraries offer a quiet and safe environment for reading, studying, and working. This peaceful setting is perfect for students needing a place to focus, remote workers seeking a change of scenery, or anyone needing a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

### 7. **Promoting Literacy and a Love for Reading**

Libraries play a crucial role in promoting literacy and a love for reading. They offer programs specifically designed to encourage reading among children, such as summer reading programs and reading challenges. These initiatives help develop critical thinking, imagination, and a lifelong love for books.

### 8. **Conservation of Cultural Heritage**

Libraries preserve and provide access to local history and heritage through special collections, archives, and historical documents. They are custodians of our collective memory, ensuring that future generations can access and learn from the past.

### Conclusion

In an era where information is often behind paywalls and social interaction is increasingly digital, public libraries stand as a beacon of free, accessible knowledge and community engagement. By utilizing your public library, you support a vital institution that not only enriches your life but also strengthens your community. So, take a trip to your local library—you might just rediscover a treasure trove of resources and opportunities.
