Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chair Joe Manchin and Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski introduced legislation Wednesday that would “advance American leadership in artificial intelligence,” including for energy and environmental applications.

The “Department of Energy AI Act” would use the Department of Energy’s 17 national labs to develop technology and streamline permitting for AI projects.

“As AI technology takes the world by storm, the United States needs to meet the moment quickly and effectively before our adversaries do. The DOE and its network of National Laboratories are ready and able to bring our nation to the next level of scientific discovery and global competitiveness through the innovation of safe and responsible AI,” said Manchin in a statement.

The bill would authorize the Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence for Science, Security and Technology initiative. It also seeks to improve the federal permitting process for energy-related projects, including critical minerals, using AI.
