In this week’s It’s Debatable column, Rick Rosen and Charles Moster explore whether the federal government should play a role in regulating AI. Rosen retired as a professor from the Texas Tech University School of Law and is a retired U.S. Army colonel. Moster is founder of the Moster Law Firm based in Lubbock with seven offices including Austin, Dallas, and Houston.

I told Charles when we discussed this topic that I am a “dinosaur” and know little about AI. I was, however, a fan of HAL from the 1968 classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. As advanced as HAL was, it malfunctioned, and as it turned out from the 1982 sequel, it failed due to a human programming error.
